Café at the Railway
Just next door at Okehampton’s lovely traditional station, you can enjoy an extremely good English breakfast to start your day, as well as afternoon teas.
Runners
The Granite Way is perfect for anyone training for a half or full marathon or those who simply love to run. It’s long, flat, and, except in high season, has very few users.
Walks Up to the Moor
One of the main attractions of the area is walking to the moor. The quickest way is to go back onto Station Road, turn left under the railway bridge, and keep walking until you see signs directing you to the moor.
A Nicer Way to the Moor:
Take the tramway (the track/road you arrived by), take a left, and follow the track until you reach the river and woods. Follow the river upstream, and you’ll have several options to head up onto Dartmoor.
If you continue along the track beside the river and up the wooded valley, in approximately a mile, you’ll come to a small bridge. Look up and see a granite wall above you; choose your path up the hill, keeping the hill with the flagpole on your right and the wall on your left. Over the brow and down, you’ll reach Belstone Village, a pretty little moorland village where you can get cream teas in the old chapel (open Friday to Tuesday) or lunch at the Tors Pub. Sit outside for a lovely view of Dartmoor.
Wild Swimming Within Two Miles
Follow the tramway bridleway and footpath from Honeyside Down to the river, about a 15-20 minute walk, and choose your spot for a bracing dip. Alternatively, Culliver Steps is a pretty mile-and-a-half walk away, and for the more adventurous, Meldon Quarry is just two miles down the Granite Way. Shelly Pool is a 10-minute drive away.
